Achieving Network Redundancy and Scalability: A Case Study

In today's fast-paced digital era, software development companies heavily rely on robust and resilient network architectures to ensure uninterrupted connectivity and seamless operations. This case study explores how a app development company in the USA successfully overcame the challenge of outdated network infrastructure and achieved redundancy on the edge and core of their network, thanks to the implementation of a full-mesh network architecture.

Challenges

Outdated Network Infrastructure : The app development company faced a critical challenge with their existing network setup. The single Juniper switches deployed on the access and aggregation levels were nearing the end of their support and license. This posed a significant risk to the company's operations, as any network failure could result in downtime, loss of productivity, and potential revenue loss. To mitigate this risk, the customer sought a solution that would provide redundancy and scalability while minimizing disruption to their ongoing projects.

Solutions

Full-Mesh Network Architecture with FortiSwitches : To address the challenge at hand, the customer opted for a full-mesh network architecture, leveraging FortiSwitches to achieve redundancy on both the edge and core of their network. The solution involved the deployment of two MCLAG (Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation) pairs of FortiSwitches on the edge and two MCLAG pairs on the core, all connected to the main High Availability (HA) A-P FortiGate.

To ensure seamless connectivity and cater to various network requirements, multiple tiers of access switches were strategically deployed. These switches facilitated end-user connectivity, supported video and voice applications, and connected to respective Access Points (APs). The configuration process was streamlined and required minimal effort, allowing the company to swiftly transition to the redundant topology without compromising their demanding project deadlines.

Results

The implementation of the full-mesh network architecture with FortiSwitches yielded significant benefits for the customer:

Enhanced Redundancy: By deploying MCLAG pairs of FortiSwitches on both the edge and core, the company achieved redundancy at critical network levels. This redundancy ensured that even in the event of a switch failure, the network seamlessly switched over to the redundant topology, minimizing downtime and maintaining uninterrupted connectivity.

Scalability and Flexibility: The full-mesh network architecture provided a scalable foundation for future growth. The company could easily expand their network by adding additional switches or upgrading existing ones without disrupting ongoing operations. This flexibility allowed them to adapt to changing business needs and accommodate new projects seamlessly.

Improved Network Performance: The upgraded network infrastructure, coupled with the full-mesh architecture, significantly improved network performance. The increased bandwidth and optimized traffic flow resulted in faster data transfer, reduced latency, and enhanced user experience for both internal employees and external clients.

Minimal Disruption and Timely Implementation: Thanks to the efficient configuration process and meticulous planning, the customer was able to transition to the redundant network topology within a few days. This minimized disruption to ongoing projects and ensured that the company met its demanding deadlines without compromising quality or productivity.

By embracing a full-mesh network architecture and deploying FortiSwitches, the app development company successfully overcame the challenge of outdated network infrastructure. The implementation of redundancy on the edge and core of their network not only enhanced network performance and scalability but also ensured uninterrupted connectivity and minimal disruption to ongoing projects. This case study highlights the importance of robust network architectures in the software development industry and showcases how the right solutions can empower companies to thrive in a highly competitive landscape.
